LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team assisted in the recovery of a vehicle from a Lehigh Acres canal following the rescue of a mother and child by a stranger.

On Friday, the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a call in reference to a vehicle in a canal at the corner of 32nd Street West and Ann Avenue North, Lehigh Acres.  Deputies responded to the scene and met with the 34-year-old driver who said she was driving east on 32nd Street West when she came to the stop sign at 32nd Street West and Ann Avenue North.  The driver said she attempted to stop but her brakes failed. The vehicle continued to travel and eventually plunged into a canal.

Deputies then met with Guadalupe Gonzales, of Lehigh Acres, who said he was coming out of his house to go to work when he heard someone yelling there was a car in the canal. He then ran to the canal and jumped in pulling the driver and her two-year-old son out of the vehicle.  Gonzales brought both of them safely to shore. He said he did not think about what had to be done he just jumped in the canal.

The driver and her two-year-old son were transported to Lehigh Regional Hospital where they were treated and released.
