CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- A Charlotte County Sheriff's K9 deputy stopped a man for speeding that resulted in seizure of 10 pounds of marijuana, $3,850 in cash and seizure of his car.

The deputy observed a 1996 green Mitsubishi going 70 mph, 10 miles over the speed limit and stopped the car Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. on U.S. 17 at Turback Drive, northeast of Punta Gorda by Peace River Shores. The driver, Jonathan Morales-Diaz, 23, 919 25th Street, Winter Haven, Florida, told the deputy he was heading to Cape Coral. A check of his driver’s license found he was only allowed to drive for business purposes.

When backup deputies arrived, they searched Morales-Diaz and found the sizeable amount of cash on him. Deputies could smell an overwhelming odor of fresh marijuana coming from the car. In the trunk they found a large black duffle bag that contained several large clear plastic baggies. The total weight came to 10 pounds of marijuana. Deputies also seized the car for forfeiture.

Morales-Diaz was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he remains on $5,500 bond. Anyone with knowledge of illegal drug activity is asked to please call the CCSO Narcotics Unit at 941-575-2157 or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
