LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Students athletes could soon face big fines for losing their cool on the field.

The Lee County School District is debating whether to fine players or coaches for unsportsmanlike conduct including profanity, illegal hits or fighting.

Erik Timko is the athletic director at North Fort Myers High and says a stricter student code of conduct is a good thing.

"We want you to be competitive. We want you to be passionate, but there is a line you can't cross," he said.

The state issues the fine and students would be forced to pay or face the threat of being off the team.

"The first time you get fine, parents ain't going to have the money to pay it. So, you're going to be kicked off the team and there go scholarships and everything else," said Burt Sopha.

Board members will vote on the issue in June.
