LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee County Animal Services is facing a major shortage of cat and dog food. They're now asking for the public's help to keep supplies stocked.

The shelter's Pet Pantry provides free cat and dog food for about 1,400 people on public assistance. But right now, the shelter's completely out of cat food and running low on supplies for dogs, too. Organizers say the program is much more cost-efficient than owner's surrendering pets to overcrowded shelters.

"No shelter wants to take in these animals because it's hard enough to find homes for all the strays that we have, much less people's own pets. So it helps all the shelters and it helps the pets, too. The pets don't want to go into a new home and the people don't want to let their pets go," Ria Brown of LCAS said on Tuesday.

The greatest need right now is for dry cat food.
