Police found the body of a 13-year-old boy in a driveway in Fort Myers Wednesday morning.   They say, Desmond Jones had been fatally shot.   Detectives are interviewing witnesses and others, trying to find out who fired on Jones at 3:40 in the morning.

"It is sad, just sad.  You wonder what he was doing out on the streets at 3 or 4 in the morning," said J. T. Roth, who has lived across the street from the shooting scene for 40 years.

Police say that Jones did not live at the house where he died.  His home is about 1/2 mile away in Fort Myers.

"it is an unfortunate and sad event when a 13-yr. old is shot and killed.   I don't care if it happens in Ft. Myers or anywhere else, it is an unfortunate event," said Ft. Myers Police Sgt. Sean Hoover.  "I am confident we will solve the case and find the shooter.   What's sad also is that this probably resulted from some minor upset, or over nothing significant.   It's a shame to settle a minor beef with gunfire.    That's why we are trying to get guns off the streets in the city."

WINK News learned that Jones was arrested a week ago in Ft. Myers.  The arrest report says he choked his 19-year-old pregnant sister and pushed her to the floor of their home.    He apparently wanted money from her.  Jones was charged with domestic battery and assault on a pregnant woman.    He was booked into juvenile detention and later released.   It's not known whether that arrest is related to the fatal shooting.

"I am shocked by this.  a 13-year-old is just a kid," said John James, who lives near the shooting scene.
