FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The Fort Myers Police Department is investigating a fatal crash near Colonial Boulevard and Fowler Street in Fort Myers.
The victim in the crash has been identified as Terrance Hamilton, 30, of Fort Myers.
On Monday, at about 5:17 a.m., FMPD responded to a fatal crash on Fowler Street.
According to investigators, the driver of a 1998 Lexus was traveling south on Fowler Street towards Colonial Boulevard when he failed to negotiate the curve.
The car crossed the road, hit the curb, went up over the sidewalk and hit a tree.
The impact split the car in half.
30-year-old Terrance Hamilton was the only person in the car at the time of the crash. He died on scene.
Speed played a role in the crash.
The posted speed limit on Fowler Street at Colonial Blvd. is 40 mph. Traffic homicide investigators believe Hamilton was traveling at twice the posted limit.
The car also hit a light post in the lot of the Fort Myers Toyota Dealership before coming to a stop.
The lights fell on nearby cars for sales.
Crews were out repairing the post Monday afternoon.
