PUNTA GORDA - Charlotte County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit detectives arrested John Ridge Emery III of Englewood in connection with the Justice Center evacuation this morning.
Detectives said Emery and his wife were driven to the Justice Center by a friend as Emery was to appear before Judge Paul Alessandroni this morning for a hearing in reference to moving his traffic related case to a separate venue.
Emery handed the judge an envelope suspected of containing a biological/chemical agent. The envelope was immediately given to CCSO court bailiffs; the courtroom was cleared and the building evacuated.
Emery was transported to the CCSO Major Crimes Unit for further questioning. He was then transported to the Charlotte County Jail and charged with Manufacture, Possession, Delivery, Attempted or Threatened Use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction and is being held on no bond. MCU detective continue their investigation tonight and no other details are being released at this time.
