FORT MYERS, Fla.-UPDATE: Police have arrested Emit Scott for child neglect. Police have learned that a 3-year-old boy was playing with a gun that was left on a couch and accidentally shot the two-year-old victim. Scott was one of the caregivers of the victim at the time of the shooting. More arrests are pending in the case.
A 2-year-old boy is recovering at HealthPark Medical Center after he was shot in the shoulder. The shooting occurred after midnight in an apartment complex in the 3000 block of 2nd St.
Victoria Carnell is a friend of the injured boy’s mother.
"Our kids play with her kids all the time," Carnell said. "They're good people, it was an accident. She is a good mother."
Carnell told WINK News that her friend takes good care of her little boy and is in no way responsible for the incident.
"I do know for sure that there was another child that shot [the toddler]," explained Carnell.
The Fort Myers Police Department couldn't confirm what Carnell claimed. But a news release stated that there were four adults and another child in the apartment when the shooting happened. Officers also found a revolver and a semi-automatic handgun.
Jesse Denson, who visits his mother-in-law at the apartment complex, told WINK News that he was shocked to hear about the shooting.
"Why would you do that and leave it where a child [can] get their hands on [it]? I think it is pretty much unusual for this area. We can pretty much look at this as an isolated incident," he said.
Residents of the apartment complex said this incident is an opportune time to remind parents that they need to be smart and responsible about where they leave their weapons.
Detectives believe the shooting was an accident, but are investigating it.
The toddler underwent surgery today and is in stable condition, according to several people who live at the apartment complex.
