PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Kenel Barthelus, 22, of Port Charlotte, in connection with the Monday attempted murder shooting incident at Auto Shine Window Tint, 23375 Harborview Road, Charlotte Harbor on Thursday. Barthelus turned himself in at the Charlotte County Jail at 3:30 p.m.

After the shooting, detectives met with the owner and an employee who said Barthelus threatened to kill them following an argument, but drove off in his red 2004 Acura. A short time later Barthelus came back and fired shots at the two men, they ducked for cover and were not injured. Barthelus sped away from the scene.

Tuesday morning the SWAT team surrounded Barthelus’ house and upon entry, found no one inside. In the home detectives found a Crack Cocaine cookie, 15.1 grams in a wooden box, plus 58 Xanax pills and two Soma pills in plastic baggies. Also found in the master bedroom was a black 40 caliber Glock 27 handgun; a check found that the gun was stolen. The red Acura was in the driveway; a search found a 9mm brass bullet casing in the car. The Acura was towed for forfeiture proceedings.

Crime Scene technicians collected three 9mm casings on Homewood Street by the business for evidence. They also collected a 9mm bullet that hit the business owner’s car. The 9mm casing found in Barthelus’ car was a perfect match to the other casings found on scene. A warrant was requested for Barthelus’ arrest and a BOLO was issued to law enforcement; CCSO issued a press release about Barthelus to the media.

Barthelus was charged with Attempted Murder with a Firearm, two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Shooting a Deadly Missile into a Public Building, Discharging a Firearm in Public, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Xanax and Possession of Soma.
