NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - In an effort to further protect its shoppers from harmful germs, such as E.Coli and MRSA, Winn-Dixie Stores is working with Green Secure Solutions to clean, sanitize and protect the shopping carts, hand baskets, handicap carts, food trays and other equipment at Winn-Dixie’s 484 stores

The mobile unit boils the carts in 180 degree water before workers spray on a bio-protective seal.

The process provides an invisible shield that kills bacteria and other microorganisms for up to six months.

This protects Winn-Dixie customers – and the food they are buying –from potentially-harmful germs.

Researchers from the University of Arizona swabbed shopping cart handles in four states looking for bacteria, of the carts tested, 72 percent turned out to have a marker for fecal bacteria while discovering traces of E-coli on 50% of them.

Winn-Dixie has been performing the buggy wash for 2 years and say they will continue to look at it as a long-term option.
