FORT MYERS, Fla - In conjunction with National Library Week, April 10-16, the Florida Library Association (FLA) announced its annual awards.  These awards recognize outstanding libraries, individuals, businesses and library supporters across the state.

The Lee County Library System has won the Public Library Web Site Award for creation of an appealing, functional, and flexible Web experience that makes good use of resources and staff. The site uses subsites directed toward specific audiences and a home page that allows users to reach most-wanted items quickly.

The purpose of this award is to promote awareness of the importance of good design and usability in web page development and to recognize outstanding examples of effective library web pages. Key considerations for judging are: creativity and/or innovation in overall design and appearance of the web site; arrangement of information and ease of use; accessibility for all users, including users with disabilities; subject areas; access to virtual library services; linked web sites; services and databases available to the public.

“We are extremely happy about this award.  We strive to offer a very robust website, with content that is updated daily.  We actually think of the website as another branch of the library system - the E-Branch! I hope more Lee County residents will log on to the website and dig deep.  There is so much there!  ” says Lee County Library System Director, Sheldon Kaye.

Some of the services that can be found on the Lee County Library System Website include: the entire catalogue of books in the Lee County Library System as well as e-books and audio books; a calendar of events and programs at all the libraries in the system; access to paid databases (the library is a subscriber on the patron’s behalf) for all types of research; demographics, business resources, genealogy information; clipping services; health reference material; legal forms; full-text magazine and newspaper articles, as well as television and radio transcripts, pictures, maps and more.  These services are free with a Lee County Library System full use Library card.

This year’s FLA award winners will be recognized on May 6 at the Florida Library Association’s annual conference in Orlando.
