PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies are on scene of a school bus and car crash at U.S. 17 and Golf Course Road east of Punta Gorda.

The car crashed into the left rear of the bus and lodged under the bus.

CCSO received the call at 3:14 p.m.

Deputies and Charlotte County Fire officials report there were about 40 children on the bus and six had very minor injuries.

The driver of the car was transported by EMS to a location for a helicopter to transport to Lee Memorial Hospital Trauma Unit.

CCSO deputies report that another school bus is en route at this time to take all of the children back to East Elementary School a few blocks away.

FHP is on scene investigating the accident.

Deputies are directing traffic around the crash scene and motorists are advised to find an alternate route.
