DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Daytona Beach Police Department will pay to have a body exhumed and the remains shipped to Ohio after mistakenly burying a man in a potter's field.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood delivered the news to 72-year-old Nancy Melchioris last week after learning of the family's financial predicament.

Chitwood says a detective who investigated the death of 52-year-old Robert Sholtis last June thought the medical examiner's office notified relatives. According to police reports, Sholtis died of natural causes in his motel room and after an autopsy, his body was sent to a funeral home that handles indigent deaths.

Melchioris wanted a proper burial for her son, but couldn't afford the cost. Chitwood says when he learned of the mistake, he wanted to make things right.
