CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A Cape Coral Parks and Recreation employee has been arrested amid accusations of stealing city funds.
Police says Susan Eileen Burns, 47, was taken into custody Saturday, one day after resigning her job with the city. She's accused of stealing $860 out of deposits from Pops Cafe inside Cape Coral City Hall.
Parks and Recreation staff discovered the theft through the department's accounting software. The financial tracking program showed two deposits had not been processed; one for $402.43, the other for $457.83.
Detectives questioned Burns Friday; she admitted to putting the deposits in her desk drawer and removing cash for personal use. Police say Burns tried to replace about $300, but, the City's financial tracking system had already flagged the theft.
Burns was arrested Saturday and formally charged with three counts of Grand Theft. She was booked and transported to the Lee County Jail.
