BOCA RATON- A Delray Beach police officer died after he crashed his patrol car into a palm tree near Boca Raton.

Authorities say Sgt. Adam Rosenthal was driving to work Thursday morning when he left the road for some unknown reason and wrapped his blue and white supervisor's cruiser around a tree, nearly splitting it in half. The 39-year-old officer was still alive when rescue workers pulled him from the mangled vehicle. He was taken by helicopter to a Delray Beach hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office traffic homicide investigators say they're not yet sure how fast he was traveling. Investigators will be checking for any possible mechanical or medical issues.

Delray Beach police say Rosenthal leaves behind a wife and four children.
