NEW PORT RICHEY- A passenger in a car stopped by police for an equipment violation was shot and killed after pulling a gun.
Authorities say New Port Richey police officers pulled over a Honda Civic about 1:45 a.m. Thursday. Officials say two men and a woman stepped out of the car, but a man in the backseat refused and pulled out a gun.
A Pasco County Sheriff's deputy who was backing up the police officers saw the weapon and yelled, "gun." That's when officials say the man began firing. The officers and deputy returned fire.
Officials say it wasn't clear who fired the fatal shot.
The passenger's identity was not released.
