GAINESVILLE- Motorists on northbound Interstate 75 near Gainesville were being detoured for several hours because of possible structural damage to an overpass.

The Florida Highway Patrol says a tractor-trailer hauling equipment hit the Williston Road overpass about Monday morning, bringing traffic to a standstill south of Gainesville.

Officials say the lanes were closed for several hours while Florida Department of Transportation experts examined the overpass. Traffic was rerouted through the city and back onto the highway.

The lanes were eventually reopened, but the exit remained closed Monday afternoon.
