BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A woman police say was shot by a former Florida Atlantic University police officer has died.

Boynton Beach police say 29-year-old Sheri Carter, who advertised her services as an escort on a website, died Friday morning at a Delray Beach hospital. Police charged 47-year-old Jimmy Dac Ho with first-degree murder. He had been charged earlier this week with attempted first-degree murder.

Police say they responded to Carter's apartment Monday night. Officers found the woman in her bedroom, suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Police traced phone records back to Ho, who told investigators that the shooting was self-defense. He said there was an argument over money, and he thought the woman was trying to rob him.

Ho resigned from FAU Tuesday. He was being held without bail.
