FORT MYERS, Fla.-The annual crime statistics are out and overall crime in the city has dropped nearly 7 percent. Violent crime is down nearly 15 percent in spite of budget and pay cuts in the department. In every category but two, there was a drop in crime across the city in fact murders dropped from 17 in 2009 to 7 in 2010. Auto thefts dropped by more than a hundred cases in just one year. Only theft and sex offenses saw a slight increase.

Police Chief Doug Baker credits the diligence of the police department and community members that participate in keeping Ft. Myers neighborhoods and businesses safe. They also continued policing programs that helped take some 286 guns off the streets in 2010.
