FORT MYERS, Fla.-- The WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk raised about $215,000 in donations for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

More than 500 walkers laced up their sneakers for the 3rd Annual Hunger Walk at the Miromar Outlets in Estero Saturday.

WINK News had hoped to raise $167,000 to support the Harry Chapin Food Bank. That would translate to about $1 million worth of food.

Instead, the community helped surpass that goal. The donations tallied up to about $215,000 as of the last count on Monday. That comes to about $1.2 million worth of food, or about 1 million meals.

Al Brislain, the director of the Harry Chapin Food Bank, says he is amazed by the community's generosity. He says the donations were needed now more than ever after recent freezes damaged produce that is often given to the food bank.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank supplies nearly 170 partner organizations throughout Southwest Florida.
