WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A West Palm Beach man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for strangling a woman he was living with.
A Palm Beach County judge sentenced 30-year-old Cory Bogart on Thursday. He was convicted in October of second-degree murder.
A jury rejected Bogart's story, that he killed Brenda Skene in self-defense. After both binged on drugs for several days in February 2008, he said the woman attacked him with a long knife. When Bogart put her in a headlock, she fell and hit her head.
But prosecutors say Bogart didn't call for help after Skene's death. He also sold the woman's cell phone. Skene's invalid mother and autistic daughter were both home at the time of the death.
Skene's body was found by a friend in the child's bed with a sheet over her, covered with stuffed animals. --- Information from: The Palm Beach Post, http://www.pbpost.com (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
