MIAMI, Fla. (AP) - A man authorities believe shot three people took his own life during a standoff with police in North Miami.
Police and firefighters responded to an apartment complex Monday evening where two women and a 1-year-old girl had been shot. One of the women and the child were taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital.
While rescuers were tending to the third victim, the suspected gunman, who police believed had left, began shooting at the rescuers. They were pinned down for about a half hour before police got them get out. That victim was also flown to the hospital.
Police tried to negotiate for several hours with the gunman, who barricaded himself inside the apartment. When a SWAT team finally entered that unit, the gunman was found dead from a self-inflicted wound.
Police have not identified the shooter or the victims.
