FORT MYERS, Fla. - Parts of Colonial Boulevard were shut down for hours Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning.

The road closures are due to a construction accident in the area.  Fort Myers Police say a backhoe was doing construction work near SR 82 and Lee Boulevard.

The driver of the backhoe, Mario Santos, is injured with burns over 50% of his body. He's been been flown to a Tampa hospital. One other person was injured, but was treated on scene. Police tell WINK the man's brother rescued him from the tractor.

The backhoe hit an 8 inch gas line. In an incident like this, it's best if there is a fire because it will burn all of the gas. The gas company has shut off the gas line, but need to burn off the existing gas in the line. Flames could be seen up to 50 feet in the air.
