FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A veteran Broward County sheriff's deputy has been suspended without pay after his arrest on grand theft charges involving money seized during a drug bust.

Investigators say 40-year-old Albury Augustus Burrows took more than $1,200 last year from an apartment where marijuana plants were being cultivated. Burrows is an 11-year veteran who won a heroism award after a shootout with a robbery suspect.

Police say Burrows was left alone in the apartment with about $2,400. When other deputies returned, there was only $1,200 left.

Burrows was released from jail Wednesday on $1,000 bail. His attorney didn't immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.
