VIERA, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms for fatally shooting his father days after being released from prison in 2008.
On Monday, a jury convicted Darryl Kenney of first-degree murder for killing Gary Kenney at his Merritt Island home. Judge James Earp sentenced the 24-year-old on Tuesday.
The first life sentence was the mandatory minimum punishment for the first-degree murder charge. Earp issued the second life term for an armed burglary charge.
During trial, Darryl Kenney's attorneys said he believed his father was abusing his mother and sister because of letters he received in prison from his mother.
