NORTH NAPLES, Fla. - Hundreds of people attended the grand opening of a new Publix in North Naples on Thursday.  But, dozens of them were protesters.  The protesters from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers lined up on Tamiami Trail demanding better wages.

They say Publix hasn't signed on to give tomato pickers an extra penny per pound.  It's something protesters say would give them fair wages and something other companies have already done.

"The four largest fast food companies and three largest food providers are paying this increase in some farms," said Jordan Buckley with Interfaith Action.  "It's resulted in a 70% wage increase for farmworkers."

The new Publix, a first of its kind for the company, sells some organic food and boasts gourmet products.

"This is absolutely amazing," said customer Barbara Burkett.  "Do you have any idea how long we've waited for this?"

But, farmworkers are upset because Publix is selling coffee that says right on it that they promote fair trade and liveable wages.  The protesters want the same promise.

"We'd like for the same justice to be applied for us," said Neli Rodriguez with the Coalition for Immokalee Workers.

Rodriguez said farmworkers currently only make between $8 and $10 thousand dollars a year.  But, Publix says the company promotes fair trade and the protest isn't about the store.

"That's a labor dispute between buyers and employers," said Publix spokeswoman Shannon Patten.  "They're upset about the terms of their employment and they want us to get involved."
