ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Turns out a reported home invasion and hostage situation in St. Petersburg was a hoax.
Authorities say 35-year-old Binh Nguyen had knocked on a neighbor's door Saturday morning and asked him to call 911 because armed men broke into his home and were holding his parents hostage. A Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report says the parents do not speak English and were unable to communicate with the neighbor.
The SWAT team entered the home and determined the story was a fabrication concocted by Nguyen for unknown reasons. Nguyen told deputies he was under the influence of prescription drugs and alcohol.
Nguyen was charged with filing a false police report and possession of drug paraphernalia. He may also have to pay $13,000 for the response costs if he's convicted.
