FORT MYERS, Fla. - Nations Association Charities will kick off its Annual Food Drive for the 2010 holiday season, Tuesday October 12 at 10:00 am at its Community Service Center at 4625 Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers.
The agency hopes to collect some 2,500 turkeys and food baskets to distribute to Lee County’s most economically-disadvantaged families. Several local dignitaries are expected to attend the kick-off, and students from Canterbury School will perform holiday songs. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
Nations is turning to the public once again to make its yearly holiday food drive possible. Turkeys, canned foods, and other non-perishable items will be accepted through Christmas at its Palm Beach office, as well as at Perkins restaurants throughout Lee County. Funds are also welcomed to help purchase any shortfall in food items. The agency is also seeking volunteers to help pack and distribute food boxes.
Nations has begun accepting applications for food baskets on weekdays, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, and will continue through November 12. Each food basket will include a turkey.
As part of its holiday tradition, Nations will also serve meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day to some 900 of the county’s most vulnerable individuals, among who are families on the breadline and the homeless.
To make the Thanksgiving Day meals possible, the agency has again turned to All Faiths Unitarian Congregation, which along with others in the community, are coordinating efforts to provide, prepare and serve the meals. The feast, with all the trimmings, will be served at 12 noon, at Schandler Hall, 419 Florence Avenue (off Palm Beach Blvd.), Fort Myers, 33905.
In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, on November 9, at 10:00 am at its Palm Beach Boulevard location, Nations will kick off its Christmas Toy Drive to help bring some holiday cheer for the children of the hundreds of impoverished families it serves.
