FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Lee County Commission will consider a $600,000 funding request today that could lead to a tax increase and light rail.
The Metropolitan Planning Organization wants the money to create a Transit Authority. The Authority would then lobby for a one percent sales tax increase to pay for a light rail system.
Some County Commissioners are questioning if this is the right to time to spend that kind of money since employees are being furloughed and the budget cut. The debate and vote will be part of their regular Tuesday meeting.
