NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Navy sailor from South Florida has died after being hit by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense announced Sunday that 22-year-old Hospital Corpsman Edwin Gonzalez of North Miami Beach died Friday from wounds suffered during combat in Afghanistan's Helmand province.
Gonzalez was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Forces, Atlantic, at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
As of Thursday, at least 1,219 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.
The AP count is four more than the Defense Department's tally.
