PAHOKEE, Fla. (AP) - A man reportedly drowned after jumping into Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach County.
The sheriff's office reports that the 52-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was submerged and could not be seen from the dock when deputies arrived Tuesday evening. Rescue divers found him and pulled him from the water about a half hour after 911 was called.
Witnesses told investigators that the man was attempting to reach a lid from a bucket that had fallen into the lake. He first used a net, which slipped from his hands, and then jumped into the lake to retrieve it.
The man began to struggle, and a witness tried to pull him back with the net. The man eventually lost his grip and went under.
