FORT MYERS, Fla - A man who barricaded himself in a Fort Myers hotel has surrendered peacefully to Fort Myers Police officers.
According to police, a hotel patron at the Howard Johnson's on Cleveland Avenue in Fort Myers was supposed to check out at 11 a.m. but didn't. FMPD was asked to check on the guest, but the guest wouldn't open the door and refused to come out of his room.
After negotiating with the man, he gave up peacefully about 2:30 p.m.
The suspects name is not been released because he has been taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.
However, police confirm he has a long rap sheet.
Witnesses on the scene say there were at least a dozen police units and the SWAT team on the scene Monday afternoon.
Parts of U.S. 41 were also shut down. But reopened about 3 p.m.
