CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - A Charlotte County Sheriff’s road patrol deputy saw a suspicious van with a Tennessee license plate and four occupants parked behind an Olean Blvd. pharmacy in Port Charlotte waiting for it to open at 9 Wednesday morning.
The two men and two women said they had appointments with a physician in Miami and received prescriptions for Oxycontin and other pain management meds. They were waiting for the Port Charlotte pharmacy to open to have prescriptions filled. The deputy noticed one occupant, Kelly Renee Mowery, 24, of Niota, Tennessee, was squirming around and also moving things around in her purse; she was advised to stop squirming and sit still. Consent to search the van was given and the four were told to sit outside. Backup units responded and found two cut plastic drinking straws in Mowery’s purse that tested positive for opiates. The other three people were released.
Mowery was arrested and transported to the Charlotte County Jail for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Deputies learned that Mowery was concealing additional drinking straws in her vagina and during a strip search at the jail she removed the two straws. Mowery posted a $1,000 bond and was released.
