ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - A St. Petersburg landmark pier is set for demolition.

The city council on Wednesday endorsed Mayor Bill Foster's recommendation to demolish the inverted pyramid at The Pier.

The upside-down pyramid pier opened in 1974, replacing a Mediterranean-style pier built in 1921. Its condition has deteriorated, and the pier is set for a $50 million overhaul.

Foster says the pier needs to come in closer to shore, and it's time to change its shape.

The council will choose a finalist to design the new pier.
