FORT MYERS, Fla. - Nearly 2 months after a national campaign promoting southwest Florida beaches, statistics show that interest is peaking.
Hits to the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau's website jumped 16% just one week after the ads hit the airwaves.
Positive testimonials are coming in as well, "One (customer) that got off the plane went to our visitor booth, and said 'We saw the commercials and we're here," said Nancy Hamilton, Director of Communications for the LCVC.
A recent survey shows that 7% of people still believe area beaches have oil.
Lee county officials approved $700,000 towards the campaign, on top of $500,000 given for media promotions by BP.
Meanwhile, local business owners are still fielding questions about the spill while waiting for business to pick back up.
"Some of them ask if the oil is coming but I said no everything is fine here," said owner of Burrito-a-GoGo Renate List.
Experts say, while the initial response is positive, it could still take 6 months to know the true results of the campaign.
In another promotion, the LCVC is hosting a 9-day southwest Florida vacation giveaway.
