PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Rob Rega of Port Charlotte spent many years as a professional database developer. When the BP oil spill happened, he used his expertise to craft a game called "spillville 2: Burn Baby Burn!" It's a spoof on the popular Facebook game "farmville" and an idea he got after reading comedian Andy Borowitz's Facebook page.
The game is pretty simple. Oil is spilling into the Gulf. The objective is to steer your Coast Guard boat through the oil, and vacuum or burn it before the it reaches shore.
"I was putting it together as quickly as I could because I was hoping that the oil spill wasn't going to last that long and I wanted to get it out while it was still a topic," Rega said. "I just cant believe I've had enough time to do this and I hope to god don't have enough time to make a third version of it."
While the idea bothered some, others saw a deeper message. "It just shows people are concerned about it and they want to get it cleaned up as fast as possible and it would be great if it worked that easily," Jolene Swiontek of Port Charlotte said.
"I am a Gulf resident," Rega said. "I'm not trying to make light of the tragedy itself. More, the attitudes of et's just drill now and forget about the consequences later.' If there's any message in it, I guess it's something along those lines, but at the end of the day, it is just a video game."
