FORT MYERS, Fla. - Members of the community joined the Fort Myers Police Department to remember the officers who died in the line of duty. Six members of the FMPD were honored during the candle light vigil, held on Widman Way, where Officer Andrew Widman was shot and killed in July 2008.
National Police Week started in 1962; it serves as a way to recognize law enforcement officers for their work and sacrifices.
In recognition of National Police Week, many homes and businesses will be displaying blue lights; many vehicles are also displaying a blue ribbon on the antenna.
In 2009, 126 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty; 8 were from Florida.
