CAPE CORALS MULTI MILLION DOLLAR UTILITY EXPANSION PROJECT IS BACK UNDER A MICROSCOPE.

CITY OFFICIALS WANT AN AUDIT OF M-W-H THE COMPANY THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CITY’S WATER UTILITY CONSTRUCTION. BUT THE VICE PRESIDENT OF M-W-H SAYS HIS COMPANY HAS ALREADY COOPERATED IN AN AUDIT PAID FOR BY THE CITY - AND IT HAS NO INTENTION OF COOPERATING AGAIN.

WHILE M-W-H SAYS THEY BROUGHT THE PROJECT IN 14 MILLION DOLLARS UNDER BUDGET, MAYOR JOHN SULLIVAN SAYS THAT DOESN’T MEAN MUCH IF THE JOB WAS OVERPRICED TO BEGIN WITH. SO HE’S ORDERED AN AUDIT OF THE ENTIRE OPERATION.

BUT IN A LETTER TO COUNCIL AND THE MAYOR – M-W-H SAYS THEY HAVE PARTICIPATED IN AN AUDIT REQUESTED BY AN EARLIER COUNCIL IN 2006 AND THEY WOULD NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANOTHER.

MAYOR SULLIVAN STRONGLY DISAGREES WITH M-W-H'S STANCE, “IM SORRY… NO IM NOT, IF THESE GUYS DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING TO HIDE THEY’D BE GIVING US THE RECORDS.”

THE MAYOR SAYS ONE OF HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISES WAS TO GET THIS AUDIT TO FIND OUT IF CAPE CORAL’S CITIZENS WERE OVERCHARGED.

MWH’S RECORDS ARE PRIVATE BUT SULLIVANS SAYS HE WILL FOLLOW ANY LEGAL CHANNELS NECESSARY TO GET THEM.

THE 2006 AUDIT WAS INCONCLUSIVE. NOW ANOTHER 60 THOUSAND DOLLARS IS AT STAKE WITH THIS LATEST AUDIT REQUEST. SOME SAY ITS TIME TO LEAVE IT ALONE.

THE MAYOR SAYS HE IS GIVING M-W-H ONE WEEK TO RECONSIDER. HE WILL APPROACH CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON WHAT THE NEXT STEP SHOULD BE.
