COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - It's your money... and people in Collier County may be asked to pay more in property taxes. The county said that extra money would go toward a children's trust.
County Commissioners said they will not be the ones to decide if property taxes will rise. Instead, they'll leave that up to the voters, who would vote on a bill that would fund things like after-school programs and health services for kids.
One group is pushing for this to happen.
"To put a children's trust law proposal on state books so at some future time people can take this issue to the voters."
Voters would decide if they wanted a tax increase to pay for the trust. Some already say no. Jim Smith said not all people who live in Collier County pay taxes. He said people should be able to voluntarily donate money to the trust if they want to.
"This is a generous area here. People have a nice sense of benevolence."
Commissioners voted 3 to 2 to keep this bill alive, but that doesn't mean it will make it onto the ballot. It just means it will be brought up for more discussion later.
