SWFL International Airport -
On the money, traveling by air is about to get more expensive.
Spirit Airlines announced they are charging for carry-on baggage.
This could cost you up to $45 each way! Frequent fliers in Southwest Florida are angry.
"I don't understand it. I really don't. It's out of control," said one flier.
The airline is taking an unprecedented move, charging for carry on baggage. The fee will be $30 dollars if you book in advance and $45 dollars if you pay at the gate.
The new fee applies only to luggage you have to put in the overhead bin. Bags you put under your seat will still be free.
"I don't know why they keep raising everything," said Emily Franz, a traveler. Spirit Airlines also charges to check regular baggage. The company says instituting this new fee will keep the cost of tickets down and help empty the plane faster.
However, fliers worry other airlines may follow Spirit's lead, which could make it even more expensive to fly.
"It could be a chain reaction and others will follow," said Taylor Behnke, a traveler.
The new carry-on baggage fee starts August 1st.
