NAPLES, Fla.- WINK News learned several new details explaining exactly what happened the night two Naples police officers were involved in a deadly domestic dispute.

The State Attorney’s Office (SAO) investigation shows Luis-Dave Monroig shot Amy Young in the head, and then shot himself. Monroig died but Young survived and suffered severe injuries to her face.

Evidence shows the attempted murder-suicide started as an argument between Monroig and Young on the night of July 9th.

According to new reports, both had been drinking. Young says Monroig pushed her to the ground where she hit her head and passed out.

When she woke up, they continued to argue. Young says she was scared and grabbed her gun.

Young doesn’t remember anything after that until she woke up next to Monroig, who wasn’t moving.

Investigators say Young dragged herself to the front yard, where her oldest daughter found her. The couple’s other five children from previous marriages were in the home during the shooting.

According to authorities, evidence shows Young never fired her weapon.

Investigators say they don’t know why Monroig shot at Young but phone conversations he taped showed he was angry and upset.

After review of the investigation, SAO has determined that no charges will be filed in this matter.

Naples Police Chief Tom Weshchler spoke in a press conference Thursday.

“I’d like to offer my condolences to the families, it’s a tragic event and our thoughts and prayers go out to them. I have complete trust in what they’ve done with this investigation. I’m hoping to next week sit down with them and get a review bit by bit of what actually took place,” said Weshchler.

That was the first thing Chief Weschler said Thursday, after hearing about this major decision from the State Attorney’s Office.

“I think the most important thing for us is to get the investigation digested, determine if there’s anything else we need to be looking into.”

The Chief said he hasn’t spoken to Sergeant Amy Young since before the July shooting. But tells WINK News, Young has visited the agency in the last few weeks.

“She has been to the department sometimes for work related, sometimes she came in to meet with her squad.”

Local attorney Ray Bass, who is representing the ex-wife of Luis Monroig tells WINK News, Young is withholding information from investigators.

“The most telling thing I think however is that Amy Young has not given a full and complete statement about the events to the investigators, nor did she do a walk through of the scene with them as requested,” said Bass.

He said Young owes that to the community.

“Frankly I think it should be a condition of her continued employment as a police officer to be full and open and cooperative 100 percent with the investigator.”
