NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla.- The man who allegedly robbed a cellphone store on Saturday and later held officers to a standoff is now under arrest.

Officials say 27-year-old Orlando Mercado entered the Cricket Wireless store located at 4398 Palm Beach Boulevard armed with a handgun and demanded money.

Two female employees inside the store during the robbery provided a description of the robber and vehicle.

Fort Myers Police Department later located the vehicle at the Country View Garden Apartments near Pondella Road and April Lane.

According to officials, Mercado retreated into a bedroom in the apartment and refused to make contact with the officers.

For hours, neighbors watched as the SWAT team and local law enforcement attempted to negotiate with the man.

Mercado later surrendered to police and provided a full confession to the robbery at the Cricket Wireless.

The suspect's girlfriend was in the apartment at the time, however she will not be charged.

Officials say, Mercado also confessed to being involved in an armed robbery that occurred earlier this month at the Mobil gas station located at 2240 Park 82 Drive.
