CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies arrested three men in East Englewood, seized more than six pounds of marijuana and seized more than $5,800 in cash early this morning.

Detectives had been observing what was described as a known drug area when they saw the men leaving the area in a yellow Hummer. The detectives in unmarked vehicles and the Aviation Unit followed the vehicle and witnessed a traffic violation.

When marked patrol units attempted to stop the Hummer, it reportedly fled the area. The Aviation Unit was able to maintain visual contact and saw the vehicle stop in the middle of the road. Two men got out of the Hummer and ran into some nearby woods as the vehicle took off again.

A K9 Unit located Xavier Jason Hearns, 25, of Port Charlotte, allegedly hiding in the woods near the area of Brandywine Drive and Bridgeport Lane. When the deputy saw him, Hearns ran into the woods on the opposite side of the street. He eventually stopped when the brush became thick.

Deputies checked the area where Hearns had been hiding and reportedly found two black bags and a large envelope. When detectives checked inside the bag, they found plastic bags that contained a substance that tested positive for marijuana. The total amount of marijuana weighed slightly more than six pounds. They also located a bank bag containing $5,846 in cash.

Xavier Hearns was charged with Possession of Marijuana with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of more than 20 grams of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Resisting Law Enforcement without Violence. He was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he is being held on a total $22,000 bond.

Other deputies located Joshua Nicholas Hearns, 26, also of Port Charlotte, as he was running out of the woods and getting into a Jeep in the area of Crown Street. They stopped the Jeep and allegedly found a small amount of marijuana in the area within the vehicle where he had been seated. He was charged with Possession of less than 20 grams of Marijuana and released on a $2,500 bond.

The Hummer was eventually stopped in the area of Brandywine Drive and Starflower Avenue. The driver, Gregory Lynn Hungerford, 41, of Port Charlotte, was arrested on charges of Fleeing to Elude Law Enforcement. During a search, deputies said they located part of a Xanax pill in Hungerford’s pocket. He was also charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was transported to the Charlotte County Jail and released on a $15,000 bond.
