PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office arrested a caretaker accused of taking more than $11,300 from the man who employed her.
The victim said that 32-year-old Renee Rolston took his debit card without permission and racked up the charges between July and September, when he was in the hospital.
The victim checked his bank account and noticed the unauthorized withdrawals made throughout Lee and Charlotte counties
Rolston was hired by the victim for housekeeping, caregaving and to manage his finances. The victim gave Rolston permission to pay specific bills with the agreement that he would sign all checks written by her. The victim said he never gave Rolston permission to take his debit card.
Deputies went to Rolston's residence, where they found the victim's debit card, checkbook, house keys and vehicle keys in her possession. The items were returned to the victim.
According to Charlotte State Bank, the transactions were conducted while the victim was in the hospital. The bank obtained surveillance video, which reportedly made it clear that Rolston conducted the transactions. Based on bank records, deputies determined Rolston systematically took money from the victim to buy goods and services to benefit herself.
Rolston was arrested and held on a $5,000 bond.
