CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Cape Coral Police arrested a man accused of reckless driving on Hancock Bridge Parkway Thursday, only two days after a child was hit and seriously injured on that same street.
Clarence Edward Williams, Jr. now faces charges of Reckless Driving and Operating a Vehicle Without a License.
Around 12:30 p.m. yesterday, Cape Coral Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on an older model Pontiac ion the 1700 block of Hancock Bridge Parkway for a seatbelt violation. The driver initially acted as if he was going to comply and pull over, but suddenly and without warning, fled from the officer, making a U-turn in front of oncoming traffic, causing other drivers to slam on their brakes to avoid collision, then accelerating up to speeds over 70 miles per hour and at times, driving on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to flee the traffic stop.
Rather than engage in a dangerous pursuit, they cross-referenced the registered owner’s information with Cape Coral Police Department call histories. Officers were able to determine the identity of the driver and also discovered that the driver had never been issued a license.
Officers responded to that residence and made contact with Williams, taking him into custody without incident. He was transported to Lee County Jail.
