CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Cape Coral Police arrested a 39-year-old woman yesterday, accused of burning a child with an iron as a form of discipline.
Mirlene Deques now faces charges of aggravated child abuse, a first degree felony.
Lee County Sheriff's deputies and a DCF investigator responded to Littleton Elementary School after being notified that child had a large burn on her arm. The child told her teacher that she had burned with a clothes iron as punishment. Due to the severity of the burn, the child was sent to the clinic, where EMS was contacted to treat the burn.
Child Protective Services determined the child suffered a non-accidental, second degree burn.
Cape Coral Police took over the investigation and met with Deques, who gave them conflicting statements. At first, police said Deques claimed the child burned herself, but then she said it was an accident.
Deques was arrested and transported to the Lee County Jail.
