CAPE CORAL, Fla.- The owner of a door-to-door meat and seafood company is accused of committing fraud with EBT cards and is facing almost two dozen charges.
Michael Schnatter was arrested Friday, and is facing 22 charges involving embezzlement and fraud. Schnatter owns Blue Ribbon Steak and Seafood. According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, he would purchase customer's EBT cards for a fraction of the value of the benefits on the card. He would then allegedly run the customer's card as a food purchase, and give the customer cash for half the value. The customer would never recieve any food...only cash.
The name Blue Ribbon Steak and Seafood may sound familiar, because it's the same company that meat salesman Nick Rainey worked for. Rainey was gunned down selling food, door-to-door in Cape Coral. This arrest has nothing to do with that murder, but WINK News spoke with Schnatter several times regarding that incident, most recently at the end of July, on the anniversary of Rainey's death.
According to deputies, Schnatter has the capability to run EBT card numbers though a computer in his vehicle.
