CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Cape Coral Police said the man responsible for ransacking a jewelry store is the same man at the center of a stand-off with SWAT last Friday. An entire neighborhood was on lockdown because of it.
When police closed in on the suspect, identified as Jonathan Massengill, he barricaded himself inside a home on SW 9th Ave. School buses were delayed and neighbors were told to stay inside as this unfolded in front of our cameras.
Massengill eventually surrendered and the 36-year-old is behind bars at the Lee County Jail. He faces charges of burglary, grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Police said Massengill confessed to several other burglaries, told them how he got in, and even told detectives where he hid everything, including the inside of an AC unit, behind a dryer, and inside speaker boxes in the so-called stash house.
The jewelry store owners said police returned 80 percent of the $31,000 worth of stolen goods.
Additional charges have already been filed.
