FORT MYERS, Fla.- Fort Myers Police have made one arrest in connection with an incident earlier this month, in which a vehicle was stolen with a baby inside. Jamie Ward, 22, has been charged with one count of Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card and Petit Theft.

On the morning of July 12, the Fort Myers Police Department received a call in reference to a vehicle that was stolen from the Brittany Apartments with a toddler in the back seat.

The family had just returned to the complex in their Kia Sportage and was assisting an elderly relative into an apartment when the relative fell. The driver of the Kia jumped out to help and that’s when an unknown suspect watching them took the opportunity to steal the Kia. The suspect then fled the scene, perhaps not realizing at first that at 2-year-old girl remained inside the SUV.

The suspect pulled into the nearby Sienna Apartments where he removed the toddler from the SUV and then dumped the vehicle in the parking lot. A resident there assisted the toddler as police arrived.

Surveillance video showed a woman, possibly Ward, following the suspect in the Kia out of the parking lot in white sedan. Witnesses at the Sienna apartments described the same white vehicle as the one that picked up the suspect at that location. Witnesses also described the suspect as younger black male 18-20 years old.

When the victim obtained her recovered property from FMPD, she told detectives her debit card had been used in at least three different locations. The detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage from the stores where the cards had been used. Images were released to the public through the media, and law enforcement immediately began receiving tips regarding the suspects. Based on the information given, officers were able to identify and locate Ward.

The investigation is ongoing.
