MIAMI (AP) - Miami Beach police have arrested a man they say preyed on tourists in hotels throughout South Florida.
The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/1aJFnin ) reports that police arrested Dequan Johnson Thursday for stealing $20,000 in cash, jewelry and electronics from Brazilian tourists in a Miami Beach hotel. Authorities say Johnson later confessed to 14 other burglaries in Miami Beach alone. The 32-year-old suspect was wanted by six other police departments.
Records show the burglaries followed a similar pattern: The suspect would enter hotel rooms while they were being cleaned. Police say he told maids that he was either a relative of the guest or staying there himself.
Johnson has been charged with 11 counts of burglary and 12 counts of grand theft. The Herald reports that his arrest record goes back to 1997.
